Microsoft Windows

Just a bit of fun, but with the imminent launch of Windows 10, we had a timely requirement to boot up a virtual PC running MS DOS and Windows 3.11.

MS DOS

Hands up who remembers squeezing every kb of memory out of their 386 memory manager, or configuring the marquee screen saver?

Thankfully the days of manually managing the memory space, memory-resident drivers and executables and very inconsistent network hardware and drivers are all gone (well, mostly) but they were the stepping stones to the significantly more sophisticated PC’s in use today. Still we feel the discipline that we had to use as a programmer in the days of restricted memory is something that’s sorely lacking today, with apps often bloating to consume massive amounts of memory.

There was some disappointment to find the computer we virtualized didn’t have QBasic installed, but we did find that you can play Gorillas via flash at this site: http://www.kongregate.com/games/moly/gorillas-bas
Just time to exit Windows and park the hard disk heads. shutdown /s
Ahhhhhh…. we’re feeling all nostalgic now!
Are you running Out Of Date software?
