Running a Facebook based competition
Running a competition on Facebook is a great way for a page to engage it’s followers, but with the ever evolving Facebook T&C’s a lot of pages are running their competition in breach of the guidelines.
What you can’t do
Many pages simply use a ‘like and share’ strategy to run the competition with wording similar to “to enter, simply like our page and share this to your friends” but that’s in breach of the rules Facebook have on pages.
The Page Guidelines on promotions (including competitions) state that ‘Personal Timeline must NOT be used to administer promotions” and that means that you can’t ask users to share a page, or to tag friends as entry to your promotion.
What you can do
You can use the emoticon responses or the pole feature to gather audience feedback, but it’s a little gray as to if that can be used as a means of entry to the competition.
You can also ask for comments (though not tagging people) and if someone then decides to tag a friend, that’s their choice.
What you must do
When running a promotion on Facebook, you must state that Facebook are not in any way associated with the promotion, endorse the promotion or sponsor the promotion, and you must state that Facebook is released from each entrant and free of obligation.
You must also make it very clear what the terms of eligibility are (such as age restrictions or location) and you must include any other terms of the promotion, and when and how the promotion ends.
